Jonathan Foreman is an editor and writer. With a background in law his primary areas of interest are urban policy, security and defence, South Asian affairs and film. While it recently played host to the Oslo Freedom Forum, Norway's capital is gripped by the Anders Breivik trial. What happens at the Breivik trial has a bearing on the libertarian and humanitarian values that underly the Forum -- one that is neither left wing nor right win, and has highlighted oppression and dissident courage in places as various as China, Singapore, Turkish Kurdistan, India and Sudan.
Now that he has gone the world feels like a darker and less intelligent place. Christopher Hitchens had no equal among public intellectuals working in the English language. The fact that I will never again hear that deep, dry voice, be in the presence of his mischievious smile, is even more painful than I expected.
