The current trajectories of Canada's predominant political economies are increasingly dysfunctional, due in no small part to the fact that we have become, in many respects, a petro state, rather than the much vaunted "Energy Superpower" that we were promised.

Arguably the most important threat facing the world right now is human-caused global warming. Common sense dictates that this issue be identified and addressed, but the technocrats' obsession with an economic plan is divorced from the reality of increasing planetary disasters.

For years now, the federal government has been censuring, muzzling, de-funding, and laying off scientists, librarians, archivists, statisticians, and researchers in its efforts vacate government involvement in core research, and to shift its focus to industry-specific needs. Public dangers inherent in this strategy of information suppression and distortion are not always tangible, but they are toxic nonetheless. The manipulations of Canada's knowledge base works as a cancer that undermines public safety, health and welfare, as well as our societal pluralism, self-determination, and sovereignty.

Syrians were peacefully protesting neoliberal economic policies -- the same economic policies that are poisoning Canada -- and the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad. They were hoping for a stronger, more sustainable economic model, coupled with a more democratic form of government. Unfortunately, the movement for peace, economic justice, and democracy, was hijacked.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is yet another corporate empowering deal that is being negotiated behind firmly closed doors, in various countries throughout the world. Not only is public input not welcome, but even the pretense of public participation has been lifted.

In June, 2013, the 300 strong Hupacasath First Nation launched a court action with the Federal Court to stop ratification of a proposed 31-year trade treaty that, among other things, gives Chinese companies unprecedented power over Canadian resources. The Chief Justice of the Federal Court presided over the hearings, and a decision will be made by the end of August, or in early September.

For decades, the advertising industry has successfully associated cigarette smoking, (and a multitude of other products,) with "freedom," and other abstractions. People not only "buy" the messages, but they buy the products as well. Similar Psy-Ops strategies are being employed in Canada under the Harper reign.

Corporate empowerment deals, including the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the as yet unratified Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA), a bilateral agreement with China, empower corporations to the extent that government legislation becomes subordinated to corporate profits. There are ways to combat this, but it will not be easy.
