Pete Emes

One half of Calgary's Smalltown DJs

Pete Emes, AKA Smalltown Pete, is one half of Calgary's Smalltown DJs. Pete formed Smalltown DJs with Mike Grimes in the early 2000s. Their sound was born out of a love for warehouse music, rap & block parties, and punk rock shows at community halls. They have released music on several labels including Fools Gold & T&A Records, and currently own in part two of Canada's best venues: The Hifi Club & Commonwealth Bar & Stage. Smalltown Pete is a judge for the 2013 Red Bull Thre3style competition, at the regional, national, and world's level.

As Smalltown DJs we began producing and releasing mash-ups, rap acapellas over top of well-known and unlikely instrumental versions. Mixing rap with dance music. Pressing them to vinyl. It seems archaic but we had to do that to be able to play the sound we wanted. Guys like DJ AM & Canada's own A-Trak continued to bridge the gap between pop, rap and dance music.
