I find society's reaction to offences committed by African American athletes and the Michael Phelps news disproportionate and eyebrow raising. It would appear that society has casually accepted his apology and his sponsors have not made any indication that they wish to distance themselves from him, as did many of the NFL's sponsors did after public backlash to the incidents above.
I like to make groups of words turn into sentences.
He's a young guy, incredible athlete, but most importantly, I think, is the intangible he brings to a team. It is not that the fact that he is gay, it is that he is gay and is not affected by society's fascination with it and appears to be complete able to operate under intense national scrutiny and attention, something very few rookies are able to do.

One of my dogs still waits for me at the front door until I get home. While I cannot understand why an individual would want to harm any animal in the way described above, I also do not think that is a question open for debate. There are numerous shelters and rescue organizations out there who would gladly offer to take your animal on an anonymous basis.

It has been said that there is a "rape culture" which exists at the University of Ottawa. It has never been OK to paint with such a broad brush. Given the severe consequences of having such a reputation, I think that before that label is handed out a task force needs to return some consistent findings. While Ottawa U has its list of problems, which I am sure many other universities face, rape is not one of them.

A bit of advice for MP Blaine Calkins, who just this week told Justin Trudeau that, if he wants to confiscate rifles and shotguns from law-abiding firearm owners, he would have to pry them from his cold, dead hands: don't be so trigger happy. Before Mr. Calkins makes any other overly dramatic proclamations during members' statements, I would like to point out two things.

If you plan on taking a selfie in your boxers exposing your Anthony Weiner, getting caught picking up a prostitute, smoking crack or anything else that may land you as the question in Jeopardy, then you are no longer the king in the king's court, you have become the jester; and not even Disney has made a movie depicting a jester becoming king, that would just be too absurd.

As the tributes continue to pour in, I wonder whether Mandela would want us to spend our time mourning him rather than working our differences towards a common goal. Mandela, known for his ability to unite quite diametrically opposed parties, leaves the planet at time where partisan behaviour seems to be only getting worse.

Rob, meet Kelvin. He can be a tremendous role model for you (and for all other politicians who have lost their way). Kelvin reminds us just how amazing human potential is, even coming out of a thoroughly corrupted environment. Kelvin is not paid a salary by his community, but maybe we should start demanding more out of our own (paid) community representatives.

For some reason, Sun News is really offended by what Justin Trudeau said about China, perhaps because Justin took a direct dig at Sun News, while answering a question at his Unplugged: Intimate and Interactive special last week in Toronto.

While I have noticed that there weren't too many sports related posts on HuffPo, I also noticed that The Sports Network's flagship show SportsCentre has become less about actual sports and more about...

While these politicians are hiding behind a procedural loophole, arguing over certain senators' use of taxpayer funds to cover their living expenses, ordinary Canadians (some of which are unable to make mortgage payments on their ONLY homes) are stuck with the bill either way and are actually financing this ongoing soap-opera. So, here's an idea, and something fed-up mothers have told fighting siblings plenty of times: take it outside!

I do not think society has been as intentionally naïve with the effects of first and second hand smoke as it has been with air pollution. Municipalities are making it much harder to smoke on outdoor patios as well. Needless to say, smokers do not attempt to minimize the effects of smoking, nor are tobacco manufacturers able to market their products freely.
