The news broke earlier this week that Karla Homolka has been living in the Quebec community under the name Leanne Bordelais with her three school-age children. Parents from the community are outraged, and perhaps understandably so.
We shouldn't begrudge the Trudeaus' childcare staff any more than we should any other household staff or assistants. I hear Sophie Grégoire doesn't do her own vacuuming either!

I live in the city of Toronto with three young children. I am a driver and I am a pedestrian. But I am a pedestrian first. Unfortunately, many of the drivers in this city do not share my love of pedestrianism. They do not, in fact, seem to care about the safety and well-being of my children at all. So I put together a few simple rules to help them avoid running over kids with their cars.

We wait until newborns are two months old before giving them their first shots. Some people have underlying medical conditions that prevent them from getting vaccinated. And in rare instances a vaccination just might not be effective in any given individual. So those of us who can vaccinate our children really should.

I've been reading about helicopter versus free range parenting for years now. They don't get the time or space to explore their neighbourhoods by themselves and learn independence in the process. If there was ever a question about which side I'd take, helicopter or free-range, I'd already long decided to be free-range. But it's not that easy.

I am lucky to have enough time and resources to not completely give up on nutrition. I do what I can. But the bar for healthy eating is set so high that ordinary, working people cannot realistically reach it, you're doing everybody a disservice. When things like the Canada Food Guide are vilified for including too many refined grains and not enough vegetables, for not going far enough, then those people who only ever get a fraction of the recommended veggie intake tend to give up altogether. Most people want to be healthy. They want to eat well. They also want to know the little bit that they can do counts. Guys, it's just food. And we are damned lucky to have enough of it.

A mega-casino will be built in downtown Toronto if we don't stop it. City council will be voting on this in the next six weeks. This is really happening and it's happening now. You don't have to be opposed to legalized gambling or casinos in general to not want one in our city. Here's why it's a bad idea.

A Canadian federal court upheld a human rights tribunal's finding that employers have an obligation to try to accommodate employee needs as they pertain to childcare. That means if your boss can reasonably let you work the day shift so you can drop your kid at daycare, then she has to. This isn't about every parent trumping every non-parent. It is designed to protect those who would otherwise be forced to leave their job. Having children may be a choice, but taking care of them is not. Juggling work and childcare is hard enough for working parents on a typical schedule.

Sure, it's a pain to fit a stroller on a bus. I get that. Do you know who else gets that? The parents or caregivers who are trying to take up as little space as possible while placating a baby or toddler on a crowded bus ride and apologizing to every person squeezing past, that's who.
