Past President of the Society for Philosophy and Psychology, External Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian-Hungarian Democratic Charter, founder and former editor-in-chief of Behavioral and Brain Sciences, published by Cambridge University Press, Harnad is now editor-in-chief of Animal Sentience published by the Institute for Science and Policy of the Humane Society of the United States.
One of the principal architects and advocates of Open Access to Research, for which he was accorded an honorary doctorate by the University of Liège, Harnad is vegan and an ardent advocate for electronic surveillance of the treatment of animals in industry and for Open Access to the data. He was the French-language spokesman in Montreal for the worldwide March Against Slaughterhouses June 13 2015. His first HP article is based on a translation of the talk he gave at that event.
