Steve Patterson

Stand-Up Comedian, Host of CBC's "The Debaters"

Though familiar to hundreds of thousands of Canadians as the host of CBC’s comedy hit “The Debaters”, it is as an international headline stand-up comedian where Steve Patterson shines brightest.

For over a decade, Patterson has performed annually in nationally televised comedy festival galas. In 2010, while recording his third Just For Laughs gala, Patterson not only earned a Gemini nomination, but his most precious praise yet from host and comedy icon Steve Martin who proclaimed:
“If I’d known he was going to be THAT good I would have cancelled him.”

Patterson’s trademark wit is well-sought after to also host productions where top-notch stand-up comedy is appreciated, including but not limited to: the Canadian Comedy Awards (2011); Industry gala nights for both the Geminis (2011) and Canadian Screen Awards (2013); and CBCs Short Film Face Off (2011-2013).

In 2013 Patterson continues his duties with The Debaters and is touring his first solo stand-up theatre tour across Canada expressing all the opinions he doesn’t get to express as the moderator of The Debaters in his one-man show “This Is Not Debatable”.

Don't Let Rob Ford's Buffoonery Eclipse What Really Matters

Between Toronto's mayor who might as well be declared the Buffoon King, freewheeling, self-centred Senators who use taxpayer money as their own personal ATMs and a Prime Minister who would rather prorogue than progress, well, it's a great time to be a Canadian comedian. If it weren't so sad.

It's Time to Take Canadian Comedy More

It's Time to Take Canadian Comedy More Seriously

Despite the incredible level of comedic talent assembled in Ottawa last week, no national spotlight was shone on the Canadian Comedy Awards and Festival as they were happening. Comedy fans across Canada (yes, there are many) who might have wanted to see what happened last week and which talents are considered to be at the top of their game will not get that chance because this country's own "Comedy Network" chose not to televise the festival and awards, again. Instead, they showed the American Comedy Awards this year. This is basically like the Oprah Winfrey Network choosing not to run any shows with Oprah Winfrey in them.

My Night Performing With Kids in the Hall

I was asked to host a fundraiser for Alberta Flood recovery and I of course was more than happy to help having spent a good deal of time in Alberta over the years. What I didn't know was that I would be sharing the bill with ALL OF THE KIDS IN THE HALL!!! (capitalized for excitement. Not anger).

What I Would Change About Stand-Up Comedy in Canada

<img alt="2013-06-23-blog_canada_day_v02.gif" src="" width="300" height="70" />As a proud Canadian fortunate enough to make my living as a stand-up comedian (primarily in Canada) for the past 16 years I'm usually faced with the same question from everyone I meet: "How do you make a LIVING?" I think what they're really asking is, "how are you still in Canada?" given the state of the stand-up comedy "industry."
