These studies are performed with patient safety and confidentiality as a priority and you are always given a choice whether or not to participate.

Imagine you are blanketed by a translucent black veil. There is chainmail weighing down your body. Then you are thrown into the middle of a tsunami. This is what postpartum depression felt like for me. Every. Single. Day. For three months.

These are beautiful plants, some flowering, further masking their sinister side effects. And they are an invasive species, meaning they are increasingly found in many parts of Canada. If you are gardening, hiking or cottaging this summer, it's advised you familiarize yourself with what these plants look like so you can steer clear.

There's a serious gap in the health-care system when it comes to treating patients with obsessive compulsive and related disorders. And limited knowledge is to blame. Most community doctors aren't fully informed on the ways to diagnose and treat OCD and related disorders, and patients are often going undiagnosed for years.

You've probably noticed nutrition claims on packaged foods when you've gone grocery shopping. Boxes, cartons, cans and bags filled with some of our favourite foods all seem to be screaming "fat free," "low sodium," or "light."

We should be talking about brain health the same way we do, say, heart health. In school, we're taught about heart disease and stroke, and how healthy eating and exercise can help us combat and prevent these diseases. And that's very important, but we should be doing the same when it comes to mental health.

This job doesn't make you a bad person. You don't lose your empathy or your goodness. It's just hard to care about other people when you don't feel cared for, or are not caring for yourself. Knowing what refuels you back to your normal, good self is as important as knowing how to resuscitate someone who is sick. What makes you feel better, like the real you?

Finding mental health help for youth and their families should be simple, but it can actually be complicated and confusing. Which professional will be most helpful? Which program will provide the appropriate services? Sometimes there seem to be too many options and you may not know where to start. To make things more challenging, you may be directed from door to door to door, making it feel like no one wants to let you in.

A small handful of nuts (30 grams) eaten each day may reduce your risk of developing heart disease and has been linked with lower body weight and lower risk of obesity. Use a handful of nuts as a substitute for unhealthy snack options such as muffins, cookies, chips and chocolate. A 30 gram serving is about the size of a golf ball.

The study of the positive aspects of caregiving has received little attention. What has become apparent, is that being able to find and focus on the positive aspects of caregiving has important outcomes including reducing caregiving stress, improving emotional status, and possibly reducing the likelihood of institutionalization.

Colorectal cancer is when cancer cells begin to grow in the colon or rectum, parts of the digestive system. The colon takes in water and nutrients from the food we eat and then passes the waste to the rectum (and voila -- poop). I have treated patients with breast cancer for more than 30 years as a medical oncologist. And I have found that most of the women in my practice are desperately looking for things they can do beyond standard treatment to increase their chance of cure. Unfortunately, many fall prey to false claims they read over the Internet or hear from well-meaning friends and relatives. They adhere to extremely strict diets -- no meat, no dairy, no sugar -- or turn to various "supplements" with unproven effectiveness and often even unproven safety.

There are over 100 types of HPV. About 40 infect the anus and genitals, or anogenital tract. In both women and men, infection with high-risk HPV may cause cancer. For men, there is a risk of cancer in the anus and penis. In women, there is a risk of abnormal cervical cell changes, as well as anal cancer.

The salt and ice challenge involves putting salt and water on your skin (usually the arm or hand), and then seeing how long you can hold a piece of ice against it. Many people, particularly teens, have been recording themselves taking the challenge and then posting it on social media.

In spite of decades of intense and costly research, Alzheimer's disease cannot be prevented, its inevitable progression cannot be halted, and even its symptoms cannot be dramatically improved. Research continues however, though this past year has seen a large number of very notable treatment failures, with drugs, vaccines and non-drug interventions.

Heart disease remains the number one killer of both men and women worldwide. In 2016, actor Carrie Fisher died of a heart attack along with approximately 17.5 million other people around the world. Heart disease has edged out cancer as the leading killer worldwide for the past few years.
