As an adolescent girl, I was awed by the notion of becoming an adult woman. Like Margaret in Judy Blume's classic coming of age novel, "Are You There, God? It's Me, Margaret," I was obsessed with all the details, particularly menstruation, and on a semi-conscious level hoped that there would be some sort of fanfare when the momentous time came.
Madeleine Shaw and Suzanne Siemens are the co-founders of Lunapads, a manufacturer and e-commerce retailer of natural feminine hygiene products, and Pads4Girls, a non-profit society that supports girls' education in the developing world. Since its inception in 1993, Lunapads' business philosophy has been firmly grounded in the belief that capitalism can in fact be a powerful force for positive social change. In the early days people not only thought our products -- reusable feminine hygiene products -- were a bit odd; some even found them off-putting: not exactly a "marketer's dream."
