The Best Sandwiches in Calgary

Best Sandwiches

Caffé Mauro

Given its location at the base of an undistinguished office building, if you didn't know of the exceptional sandwiches at Caffe Mauro, you might never know at all! (To be honest that would be a travesty.)

Let it be known to Calgary that Caffe Mauro has some of the best sandwiches in town! Whether it be one of their specialty sandwiches like the meatball or turkey breast, or the build-it-yourself sandwich board that tickles your fancy, with too many options to list, you will leave with a smile ear to ear after a sandwich experience at Caffe Mauro.

Calgaryism`s Favourite Build it yourself

  • Foccacia
  • Calabrese
  • provolone
  • Eggplant
  • Artichoke

All their sandwiches are outstanding, but this one you must absolutely try... it puts me into my happy place faster than most...

Spolumbo's Fine Foods & Deli

I can honestly say I saw Spolumbo's on its way to sandwich stardom when I first visited their deli over a decade ago.

Located just down the street from where their current location is on the corner of 9th Avenue and 12th Street SW in Inglewood, Spolumbo's quickly became known for delicious, homemade Italian sandwiches and was busier than an ant colony under attack when they were open.

Till this day Spolumbo's are still making the same quality of sandwiches and remains one of the best Calgary Italian deli's. A few of my favourites are...

  • Meatball - Homemade Italian Meatballs served on a crusty bun with fresh tomato sauce
  • Spicy Sausage - Spolumbo's Spicy Italian Sausage served on a crusty bun with fresh tomato sauce
  • Spolumbo's Special - Mortadella, Genoa, salami, Capocollo topped with Proscuitto

They also make and sell Spolumbo's Sausages that are sold all over the city in grocery stores and they provide catering.

Address - 1308 9th Avenue SE, Calgary, AB

Phone Number - 403-264-6452

Holy Grill

A restaurant that certainly deserves the name, Holy Grill is a must try. They have so many fantastic sandwiches I don't even know where to start.

I love how the paninis are on a thin, pita style bread and grilled just right, try it and you will see what I mean. From the moment you walk in the door the guys are always super friendly and the best part is the value. I find Holy Grill to be one of the best places to eat in Calgary for the quality and the value. Absolutely Holy!

Try these favourites:

  • The Mr.Chicken
  • The Pacifico
  • The Bacon Avocado Crisp

Address: 827 10 Ave SW ( Across from Mountain Equipment Co-op)

Peppino

Every time I find myself in the Kensington area I get an overwhelming craving for a Peppino sandwich.

I literally crave Peppino`s and have been eating their submarines for years and years. Till this day I chuckle when I feel my hands involuntarily turn the steering wheel towards Peppino.

This family run deli is worth a stop the next time you're in Kensington. Try any one of these favourites...

  • Vesuvius - A fiery mixture of Calabrese, Salami, Capicollo, banana peppers, lettuce, cheese and the houses special dressing
  • Pollo Al Pesto - Two tender chicken breasts topped with lettuce, tomato, cheese and a special pesto dressing
  • The Surprise - Can't decide, have a surprise. No two sandwiches are alike. One of the best sandwiches I've ever had at Peppino's was a surprise!
  • The Meatball

Address - 1240 Kensington Road NW

Phone Number - 403-283-5360

Open- Weekdays until 6pm, Saturday until 5pm
