Ward 5B Was The World's 1st HIV/AIDS Treatment Unit

"We were watching an epidemic unfold."

In 1983, San Francisco General Hospital opened up the world’s first treatment ward for people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS.

At a time when stigma was rampant and many health care professionals turned their backs on people who most needed help, the nurses in Ward 5B listened to their patients, and gave them the best care they could.
