Great news, guys. It might be getting too warm to drink hot coffee, but that doesn't mean that your beloved French press is no longer needed. That glorious, sleek container that makes it so simple to brew a cup of coffee in the morning can be used to make cold brew.
The process for making cold brew in a French press is basically the same as making hot coffee, only it takes many, many more hours to brew (12, to be exact). Room temperature water is used in place of hot water. And a higher ratio of coffee to water (1:7) is required.
More good news: according to America's Test Kitchen's taste test of cold-brew systems, using a French press makes the best-tasting cold brew. So not only can you keep using your French press -- and have no need to buy a cold brew system -- but it'll be the best cold brew around (provided that you're using good beans).
- Grind 2/3 cup of coffee beans and place in a large (8-cup) French press.
- Add 3 cups of room-temperature water.
- Stir the grinds into the water.
- Place the French press plunger on top and store in the fridge for 12 hours.
- Carefully press down on the plunger to push all the grounds to the bottom.
- Voila, cold brew is yours.
If you prefer a truly clean cup of cold brew, consider pouring out the coffee over a filter or cheesecloth so that any grounds that snuck through the mesh plunger won't end up in your cup. That's it.
