Seems like Fox decided to choo-choo-choose to renew “The Simpsons” for two more seasons.
The iconic animated television show has been greenlighted for Seasons 29 and 30, the network announced Thursday.
The renewal means that the long-running sitcom will hit 669 episodes during its 30th season, breaking the record for the most episodes of any scripted show.
“Gunsmoke,” a Western drama that aired from 1955 to 1975, previously held the record with 635 episodes.
“Take that, ‘Gunsmoke!’ You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!” Homer Simpson said in a statement, per Fox.
“This is yet another record-setting moment for what is truly a landmark series,” said Fox executives Dana Walden and Gary Newman in the statement. “’The Simpsons’ has meant so much to the network, the studio and everyone at Fox, and its continued cultural impact around the globe is a testament to the combined brilliance of [executive producers] Matt, Jim and Al.”
Now in the middle of its 28th season, “The Simpsons” has already become the longest-running scripted show in television history.
Showrunner Al Jean predicted in 2015 that the show would probably hit 30 seasons. He also said he thinks that Season 30 would be the show’s last.
Not to worry, “Simpsons” fans. The eternally 10-year-old Bart Simpson may indeed outlive us all.
Jean admitted in that 2015 interview that he’d been wrong about the show before, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I thought five seasons was good when I got there.”
