A dead cat found frozen into a block of ice in Dawson, B.C. has had a chilling effect on animal cruelty officers -- partly because it's not the first time the community has seen this kind of animal abuse.
The Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) received a call on Tuesday to investigate a dead cat found at Mile Zero Trailer Park, encased in ice, sitting atop a hydro box, CNews reports. The block appeared to have been moulded from a rubber bin that was found on the roadside close to where residents found a dog frozen in ice last year.
General Manager of Cruelty Investigations for the B.C. SPCA, Marcie Moriarty, responded to the discovery in a press release:
“It is absolutely appalling that a cruel incident like this would occur once, but to have it happen again in the same neighbourhood is extremely upsetting,” she said.
Moriarty believes one person or group could have frozen both the dog and cat, or that an imitator abused the cat, according to the Globe and Mail.
They must wait for the cat to thaw before conducting a necropsy. The dog's necropsy revealed it died before freezing, and the SPCA had assumed it was frozen by accident, CNews reported.
The SPCA hopes a Dawson Creek resident will call the South Peace Branch at 250-782-2444 with more information.
