The Alaska SeaLife Center is rehabilitating a male Pacific walrus calf that was found stranded in a lagoon near Barrow recently.
The calf, who is about four to six weeks old, was spotted by local fishermen on floating ice after becoming separated from a large group of walruses.
The little guy was rescued and transported to Alaska SeaLife Center, where it is being nursed back to health. It is suckling readily from a bottle, feeding every three hours around the clock, and consuming nearly 1,400 calories at each feed, according to Zooborns.com.
The calf is actively seeking attention from caregivers, and vocalizing when left alone. Since walrus calves almost immediately habituate to human care, they are not candidates for release following rehabilitation.
