A two-year-old girl has died after a fall from a ninth floor balcony Thursday night.

The Surrey toddler was found at 8:17 p.m. on a canopy above the entrance of a residential building by Gateway SkyTrain Station at 108th Avenue and University Drive.

Paramedics rushed the toddler to hospital but attempts to save her life were unsuccessful. She was pronounced dead at 9:30 p.m., reports The Vancouver Sun.

With temperatures expected to increase, parents and guardians are encouraged to keep a close watch on young children in highrises.

"In the warm weather, a lot of people have their windows and balcony doors open, and this case the balcony door was partly open," said Surrey RCMP Sgt. Paul Reshaur to News 1130.

Last month, a two-year-old Surrey girl survived a three-story fall after landing in a bush.
