Fashion Cares: Backstage With MAC Cosmetics

Go Backstage At Fashion Cares With MAC Cosmetics

It was a sight to be seen backstage at the final showing of Fashion Cares Sunday night -- there was glitter, there was gold and there were plenty of bold, zany and unmissable beauty looks. And The Huffington Post Canada Style got a sneak peek of the 150-odd designs some 50 M.A.C. makeup artists created for the show which took place during the Toronto International Film Festival.

The looks were painted on the faces of models and mannequins who later littered the lobby of The Sony Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto and who welcomed guests to the fête. The art-meets-makeup experience was part of a beauty retrospective honouring Fashion Cares' 25th anniversary.

M.A.C. became the chief makeup sponsor of the event in 1994 -- which happens to be the year the company's VIVA Glam lipstick was launched (100 per cent of proceeds from the lipstick go to the M.A.C. AIDS fund, which supports women, men and children suffering from the disease).

“At the beginning of the epidemic, we saw the impact of HIV/AIDS on the fashion and beauty community, and we felt that we had to do something. So we did what we knew how to do -- put on a fashion show to raise funds,” says Phillip Ing, artistic director/producer for Fashion Cares and vice-president of retail and special events for M·A·C Cosmetics. “Twenty-five years later, we’ve [grown] from a small [charity], raising $40,000, to an event that has raised millions for all Canadians affected by this terrible disease. I’m so proud to be a part of this community and this year’s incredible event."
