UPDATE: - Oct. 31, 2012: The B.C. Coroner's Service has identified a man shot in a police incident on Skeena Street in East Vancouver as 52-year-old Christopher Lewis Ray. The victim of Monday's deadly Langley crash was identified as 47-year-old Victor Melo Duarte of Delta.
The independent agency that investigates serious police incidents in B.C. are probing a deadly shooting in Vancouver as well as a separate fatal crash in Langley on Monday.
Police responded to a 911 call about a man smashing windows in the 400-block Skeena Street in east Vancouver on Tuesday. Officers were met by a man holding a knife, said Sgt. Randy Fincham in a statement.
The man, identified as 52-year-old Christopher Lewis Ray, was shot during an exchange. He was taken to hospital but did not survive his injuries.
The Vancouver Sun noted that there was a McDonald's cordoned off in the area but there was no confirmation whether it was related to the police-involved shooting.
The Independent Investigations Office, which is handling the case, has interviewed 18 witnesses, it said in an update on Tuesday afternoon. It's also probing another fatal case in Langley that happened less than three hours before the shooting.
Police there tried to stop a vehicle at about 5:30 p.m. for a traffic check in 24000 block of 0 Avenue, but it fled the scene, said a news release. Three minutes later, it crashed into another vehicle, killing the driver.
The driver of the original vehicle that police tried to stop is now in custody.
