Charges have been laid against Annop Bungay and Deepti Bungay in relation to a fatal Calgary rooming house fire that killed one and injured three others.
The blaze, which occurred on Sept. 12 in a two-storey home in MIssion, saw firefighters rescue four occupants, one of whom, Daniel McWha, 57, was unconscious and later succumbed to his injuries, the Calgary Fire Department said in a statement Wednesday morning.
A fifth man managed to escape the fire unaided.
Annop and Deepti are the owners of the house and have both been charged with 12 counts each under the Safety Codes Act.
“The violations of the Fire Code include: failing to provide smoke alarms, failing to provide fire extinguishers, failing to post floor plans showing exits and failing to provide an interconnected smoke alarm system,” said the CFD.
“The penalty for a first offence per charge under the Safety Codes Act is a maximum fine of $15,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both.”
The two are scheduled to make their first court appearance on Jan. 9, 2013.
