Internet Goes Ape For IKEA Monkey

A monkey spotted in a shearling coat in a Toronto Ikea parking lot has stolen the hearts of internet users around the world.

The IKEA Monkey has inspired memes, a twitter account and the story has been picked up by media in the U.S. and the U.K.

The 7-month-old rhesus macaque named Darwin was discovered by shoppers and IKEA staff on Sunday afternoon and became buzzed about in Toronto.

Within hours an IKEA Monkey twitter acount had been started.

On Sunday night, the story picked up steam. As of Monday morning, our story on the monkey has more than 3,000 likes on Facebook.

The monkey is currently under the care of the Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Sunderland, Ont., CBC reports. The Globe and Mail also reports that monkeys like Darwin can carry diseases harmful to humans. A Toronto Animal Services spokesperson also said that the animal was agitated because it was separated from its owner.
