Three Edmonton railway workers have been rushed to hospital after being struck by a train in the Cloverbar area of the city.
According to iNews880, the group of workers were performing track maintenance around 9 a.m. when they were hit by an eastbound train leaving Edmonton.
CTV Edmonton reports the accident happened at the crossing on Meridian Street and Hayter Road.
A spokesperson for CN Rail could not immediately say which company the workers were contracted out of, nor could he confirm injuries sustained, but Edmonton Fire Rescue has confirmed that the injuries are significant. Two have been taken to hospital in critical condition and one in serious condition.
Officials told CTV the workers could not hear the oncoming train because of noise from nearby snowplows and also they were wearing ear protection. As well, the train could not slow down fast enough because of ice on the tracks.
Crews are on site investigating.
