Police have laid charges on Ian James William Campbell, 25, of Surrey for his connection to a violent abduction in Maple Ridge, B.C.

Campbell was arrested Tuesday and faces a string of charges including: kidnapping, producing a fake firearm, choking, assault, assault with a weapon, unlawful confinement and auto theft.

Police are thanking the public for tips the lead to the suspects arrest.

A 17-year-old girl was standing outside a Maple Ridge Mall on Jan. 19 when the suspect asked the teen for help. The teen was beaten and brought to another location where she then escaped.

The suspect was known to police for his criminal activity in the past.

In 2008, Campbell was jailed for his involvement in a high-speed chase in a stolen car, reports The Province. Kyle Tait, 16, one of Campbell's passengers, was killed by an officer's bullet after the suspect tried to drive through a police barricade.

"This matter is now before the courts," said Insp. David Fleugel of Ridge Meadows RCMP. "It is a complex investigation, and there is still work to do," he said in a news release.

Campbell made his first court appearance on Thursday. He remains in police custody.
