Thanksgiving appears to be landing early in weather-ravaged South Dakota, as the state finds itself amid a hail of frozen turkeys.
Well, turkey vultures, that is.
"My wife was making breakfast, and she suddenly yelled, 'Adam! A large bird just fell out of the sky!'," Sioux Falls resident Adam Weber told the Argus Leader. "That was the last thing I expected to see when I looked out on the deck yesterday."
According to the newspaper, it was the one of two big birds that plummeted from the sky this week.
It's cold comfort for a region that has been devastated by a spring storm currently raging across the U.S. Midwest. with South Dakota getting the lion's share of snow. This week also saw hundreds of flight and school cancellations.
And, yes, turkey vultures falling from the sky.
That may have something to do with the unique weather pattern slamming the region. Storms have been occurring thousands of feet above the surface, the Norfolk Daily News reports, even as the weather at ground-level remains relatively temperate.
"We don't see that sort of thing very often," meteorologist Cliff Cole told the newspaper. "It's rare."
Falling on people's heads won't do much for the turkey vulture's reputation.
With a range covering much of the continental U.S., with British Columbia at its northernmost tip, the turkey vulture has already managed to carve out a rather unsavory image.
According British Columbia magazine, turkey vultures like to throw up their food on anyone deemed a threat and frequently defecate on their own legs to keep cool.
The bird is, however, known to cut a rug with aplomb on occasion.
