An officer did the right thing when he shot and wounded a man after police received a call about a suspicious vehicle, Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson said Wednesday.
"The officer made a split-second decision based on his belief the lives of others were at risk," said Hanson.
"Especially the female, who has been struck at least once and was still under the vehicle," he added.
Police received a call about a suspicious vehicle on Tuesday, in the city's Crowfoot area.
"We had a uniformed officer approach the vehicle," said police spokesman Kevin Brookwell. "As he was approaching the vehicle, the vehicle sped off and in doing so, mounted a sidewalk and struck two elderly pedestrians."

Plain clothes officers believed one of the occupants in the vehicle was wanted on outstanding warrants and requested assistance from uniform members, police said.
The person who was shot was in serious but stable condition, while two other people in the vehicle were taken into custody.
The female senior was in a stable, non-life-threatening condition while the male senior was not seriously hurt.
The shooting happened in a parking lot outside a Bank of Montreal branch, but police have said the incident was not a bank robbery.
As is standard practice in all officer-related shootings, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is leading the investigation.
