Tree Cutting In North Vancouver Leads To Charges (VIDEO)

Worst NIMBYs Ever?

Three men from North Vancouver are facing charges after 35 trees were cut down in Capilano River Regional Park, all because they allegedly wanted a better view of the West Vancouver waterfront.

Homeowners Roger Mulloy and Hooman Bozorgnia, as well as arborist Jeff Hoff have been charged with mischief over $5,000 for allegedly cutting trees located on municipal parkland, The North Shore News reported Tuesday.

North Vancouver Mounties became aware of the tree-cutting in February 2012, when police were notified that a swath of trees had been sawed down near the 4000-block of Capilano Road, said a Tuesday news release from the RCMP.

Police investigated a tip that the two homeowners hired the arborist to remove or cut back the trees to give them a better westward view.

Cutting the trees allegedly put homes in danger due to the risk of landslide, police said. There was also an increased risk of forest fire due to fallen debris and a "wind tunnel" effect through the area where trees were missing.

Some of the trees were believed to be 145 years old, while the value of the timber and clean-up is estimated at over $50,000.

The trees were allegedly felled on a very steep slope, and the tree cutting is now the talk of the street where Bozorgnia lives, neighbour Innes Booth told The Province.
