Gawker's "Crackstarter" has succeeded in raising $200,000 to buy the alleged video of Rob Ford smoking crack, but Twitter users, despite their usual disdain for Toronto's mayor, were torn about whether the success of the project is good or bad.
Some pointed to a report published Monday in The Globe and Mail suggesting that a man may have been murdered to get hold of the valuable video footage as proof the money may go to the wrong kind of people.
Others, such as Gawker's Adrien Chen, argued the success of the crowdfunding project represents the future of journalism.
There were also suggestions the Ford family will say the Gawker campaign is unethical because the money will go to drug dealers. Many pointed out the hypocrisy of such an argument in light of another Globe story detailing Councillor Doug Ford's alleged history as a dealer of hashish.
