The family of a University of Calgary student killed while hiking in Ecuador has established a scholarship to honour her.

The Danielle Kendall Memorial Scholarship will be given to a deserving student that is enrolled in the Schulich School of Engineering and a member of the woman’s track and field Dino’s varsity team, the family said in a statement.

The 22-year-old died in a climbing accident in Ecuador last week after being hit by a piece of ice the size of a car while climbing the Cotopaxi volcano.

Kendall was reportedly on a guided climb with seven other people when the accident occurred during the descent at about 5,400 metres.

"Danielle was an intelligent, dynamic, ambitious and determined young woman who could put her mind to anything, and accomplish it," the family said.

They also thanked those who have expressed their sympathies, including the academic and athletic communities.

The 5,897 metre volcano is about 60 kilometres south of Quito.

A private memorial will be held on Friday.
