Karen Leibovici is the second Edmonton city councillor to enter her name in the race for mayor.
The Ward 5 councillor declared her intention to run Thursday morning at the CKUA building on Jasper Avenue in Edmonton.
The 61-year-old formerly worked as a social worker and labour relations officer, and is currently the president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
“Edmonton needs a mayor with a strong track-record for leadership," she told reporters at the press conference.
“A mayor that recognizes that we are a cosmopolitan city that must balance complicated social, environmental, cultural and economic demands. And I have that ability.”
Her announcement follows that of Councillor Kerry Diotte who told of his intentions to run several weeks ago.
The pair are joined by community league president Curtis Penner in the race.
Leibovici has served Edmonton council for four years. Previously, she was a MLA for Edmonton-Meadowlark.
Current mayor Stephen Mandel announced May 21 he will not seek re-election.
The municipal election is scheduled for October 21.
