Deerfoot Trail Closed After Calgary Train Derailment On Bonnybrook Bridge

Calgary Traffic Gridlocked
TSB

UPDATE: 2:13 p.m. - The City of Calgary says Deerfoot Trail has re-opened to all traffic in both directions.

Deerfoot Trail has been closed in both directions, after a train derailment on the Bonnybrook Bridge in Calgary early this morning.

Deerfoot is closed to traffic between Glenmore Trail and the Calf Robe Bridge in both directions “until further notice,” according to police.

The weight of the train's rail cars are causing the bridge to fail, and six cars are threatening to fall into the river.

Calgary's acting fire chief says emergency crews are working to secure the cars that are on a bridge that is slowly sinking into the Bow River.

Ken Uzelok says crews are stringing a cable through the railcars and securing it to bulldozers on land so that, if the bridge gives way, the cars won't be carried down the river.

Glenmore, McLeod, Blackfood Trails, among other side streets, are being reported as gridlock conditions as many drivers try to make their way to downtown.

The following road closures are in place and will be in place for the next several hours, say police:

  • Deerfoot Trail northbound at Glenmore
  • Deerfoot Trail southbound at 17 Avenue
  • Ogden Road at 17 Street
  • Ogden Road at 50 Avenue
  • Peigan at Barlow
  • Barlow Trail at 61 Ave.
  • Highfield Crescent at 13 Street SE
  • Ogden Road at Millican Road

Mayor Naheed Nenshi has asked that Calgarians, particularly those living in the southeast, stay off the roads and work from home if possible.
