Much of southern Ontario is bracing for heavy thunderstorms, and potentially a tornado, this afternoon.

According to Environment Canada, tornado warnings are in place for Barrie, Orillia and Midland, and watches in effect for much of the rest of the province.

There are unconfirmed reports of a tornado near Barrie, and a severe storm that has already hit Bracebridge and Gravenhurst.

The Weather Network tweeted a photo of trailers overturned in Pembroke, apparently by the storm.

A metereologist at the Weather Network warned people from Caledon to Shelbourne and Mount Forest to Orangeville to take cover.

Another user tweeted a warning to curious onlookers who might go out to try and find a tornado.

There are also reports that Montreal has been hit by a heavy storm and about 500,000 people are without power.

Flights are being delayed and cancelled out of Billy Bishop and Pearson International airports, according to 680 News.

People across the province and in Quebec are submitting photos of incoming storm clouds.
