Vancouver residents have been robbed of their favourite reason to complain as record-breaking sunshine has pushed away the rain throughout the month of July.
Vancouver has already set a record for the sunniest July ever, beating the last record set in 1985. And with one day left in the month, it could top the record for driest July ever set in 1986, Global News reported.
"We’re probably going to set two all-time records in the month of July, that being the sunniest month ever and the driest month ever, if we get through Wednesday with less than a trace of precipitation," meteorologist David Jones told the network.
The weather has been so sunny because a high pressure system has been pushing storms to the north, he said.
The city last experienced rain on June 27, The Province reported.
The next record to beat will be longest dry spell, which was set at 58 days in 1951, CBC News reported.
But it's unlikely that Vancouver will hit that mark. Environment Canada forecasts cloudy weather with a 40 per cent chance of showers from Thursday through Sunday before the sun comes back on Monday.
While many city residents have enjoyed soaking up the rays, concerns about air quality have at least one air quality planner hoping for rain, The Province reported.
Laurie Bates-Frymel, with the Metro Vancouver regional district, said that hot, dry temperatures and stagnant air can lead to air quality advisories, although none have been issued since last year.
"We’re not at a level of concern but we are keeping a close eye on the situation," she said.
