An U.S. Amber Alert suspect believed to be headed to B.C. may be armed with homemade explosives.
After combing through evidence in James DiMaggio’s San Diego home, police have reason to believe he may be armed with explosives – and may have booby-trapped his car, reports the Los Angeles Times.
UPDATE: James DiMaggio and Hannah Anderson have been spotted in Idaho, News1130 reports.
Investigators are warning people to stay away from the blue Nissan Versa he is suspected of travelling in even if no one is inside, said public affairs officer Jan Caldwell of San Diego County Sheriff’s Department on Thursday.
“We believe he may have explosives, there is then that possibility that the car could be rigged if it has been abandoned,” Caldwell told HuffPost B.C.
DiMaggio is wanted in connection to the suspected abduction of 16-year-old Hannah Anderson and the deaths of two people. He was reportedly very close to Hannah’s parents, but may have developed an “unusual infatuation” with the teen, according to the Associated Press.
The remains of Christina Anderson, Hannah’s mother, and a child were found in DiMaggio’s burned house near the U.S.-Mexico border on Sunday. The body of the child is believed to be of Hannah’s 8-year-old brother Ethan, though confirmation may take days after investigators were unable to pull DNA from the remains.
Amber Alerts for the two Anderson children remain active in four states including California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. No alert has been issued in B.C.
“There is no confirmed information that they’ve crossed the international border,” RCMP Sgt. Rob Vermeulen told News 1130.
According to Vermeulen, the province's border guards have been briefed on the case and officers have been in touch with the San Diego County Sheriffs office.
An arrest warrant has been issued for DiMaggio’s capture; bail has been set at $1 million.
