A hiker who died after falling off the Chief in Squamish last Sunday was identified as Gabriole VanKeith, 57, of Vancouver by the BC Coroners Service on Friday.

VanKeith was hiking alone on the Black Dyke trail before she fell to her death on Aug. 4 at around 4 p.m.

It took rescue workers 30 minutes to find her body and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Search and rescue workers did not find any identification on her but later confirmed VanKeith's identity after locating her car nearby.

The Chief is a popular hiking destination and its 700-metre cliff is the second biggest granite monolith in the world.

The Coroners Service’s investigation into VanKeith’s death is ongoing.
