Concord Pacific Plans False Creek Central Development Near Casino (VIDEO)

Big Plans For BC Place Area A 'Shock'

Concord Pacific has lifted the curtain on a massive development near BC Place that the company calls Vancouver's first neighbourhood unveiling in nine years.

"False Creek Central" is expected to house 3,000 people in eight buildings on the north side of the Cambie Street bridge. It will include 90,000 square feet of commercial space with plans for a fitness club, restaurant and lounge, cafes, urban market, pharmacy and financial services.

The neighbourhood is being planned alongside Vancouver's Urban Resort, a $535-million project by Paragon Development Inc. and 360 Vox that includes a casino, two hotels and conference centre adjacent to BC Place.

But the residential development came as a shock to the False Creek Residents Association, whose co-chair, Fern Jeffries, told The Vancouver Sun: "Concord may be a great builder of community. Clearly, they’re not very good at communicating with the existing residents. It took us by surprise for sure."

Residents are concerned about congestion, particularly in the light of the uncertainty over plans for the Georgia Street viaducts, Jeffries told News 1130, noting that even if all the new condo residents have Smart cars, she doesn't see how it would work.

"So many people embrace the sports and entertainment lifestyle and this gives them more options," BC Lions president Dennis Skulsky said in a Wednesday news release.

"This new neighborhood will go a long way to dispel the 'No Fun' Vancouver myth."

One Pacific, a condo building with over 400 units, will be the neighbourhood's first development. The building will house most of False Creek Central's commercial space and have a deck with a cantilevered glass swimming pool and many on-site retail services, says a Concord Pacific website.
