A CN tanker train carrying oil and gas derailed in a hamlet west of Edmonton on Friday, placing the area in a state of emergency.
Police have evacuated the whole community of Gainford, where the crash happened about 80 kilometres from the provincial capital, as well as any homes within a two-kilometre radius of the incident, the RCMP said in a news release.
Thirteen cars derailed at around 1 a.m. Four were carrying petroleum crude oil and nine contained liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Three cars containing LPG are on fire, the RCMP added.
No injuries have been reported and all CN personnel are accounted for.
"It's still a risky situation so we need to contain as much as possible and keep people far away," said Carson Mills, spokesman for Parkland County, which includes Gainford.
