Caleb Kroffat Dead: 11-Year-Old Found Outside Hockey Arena

Young Boy Found Outside Hockey Arena, Dies

After being discovered outside a local hockey arena, 11-year-old Vancouver Island boy Caleb Kroffat was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

He was found, according to Global News, in "medical distress" in the Cowichan Community Centre parking lot just before 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8.

UPDATE: The Cowichan News Leader Pictorial reports that plans are in the works to frame and hang Kroffat's #10 jersey in the local arena.

Kroffat was found during a hockey game between the Cowichan Capitals and the Victoria Grizzlies, CTV News reports. The Grizzlies' bus driver spotted the unresponsive boy on the ground; both teams' medical staff performed CPR and used a defibrillator, but Kroffat died in hospital shortly after.

Kroffat's mother Renee told Cowichan News Leader Pictoral that she wasn't aware of any existing medical conditions her son may have had.

As Global News reports, the Coroner's Service is investigating, and authorities are waiting for autopsy results - but the death is not considered criminal.
