It's going to be a cold, wet weekend around Vancouver as a winter storm that some are coining a "mini-pineapple express" is expected to wallop the region overnight and into Saturday.

Environment Canada forecasts that 50 mm of rain will fall in areas including Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Howe Sound by Saturday morning.

The weather comes as a low pressure system is expected to deepen as it hits coastal B.C. An associated warm front will spread rain across the south coast this afternoon before it intensifies overnight, said a weather alert.

But the foul conditions may be a boon for Whistler, which is expected to see 15 centimetres of snow in the same time period.

Weather forecasters also say strong winds are possible for B.C.'s south coast late Saturday, with gusts reaching up to 80 or 90 kilometres per hour, though their exact route and intensity are currently up in the air.
