Three Edmonton teens have been charged after they allegedly stole a cat and stabbed it to death.

The charges come after police and fire crews were called to a small fire in the Mill Creek Ravine around 6 p.m. last Thursday.

When they arrived, crews discovered the remains of a cat, bloody scissors and an animal crate.

Zachary Allen McKinnon, 18, Wendell Mack Mah, 18, and a 14-year-old male who cannot be named under the Young Offender Act, were all located nearby and arrested.

Police say the trio is alleged to have stolen the cat from the home of someone they knew, before taking it to the ravine and stabbing it to death.

“From what officers have told me (the teens) appear to be very remorseful,” Edmonton Police Service spokesperson Scott Pattison told reporters, adding the "loving and docile" cat was a 15-year-old family pet.

All three teens have been charged with animal cruelty.
