UPDATE: 1:40 p.m. — Roberto Luongo has been traded to the Florida Panthers.
The upcoming NHL trade deadline (Wednesday, March 5) has seen Roberto Luongo's name return to the rumour mill after the he spent the Heritage Classic on the bench last weekend.
Hockey commentators talked up the Canucks goaltender on Twitter Tuesday, linking him with possible moves to numerous teams:
Meanwhile, trade talk continues to swirl around defenceman Alexander Edler and centre Ryan Kesler, despite the latter shooting down a report that he wanted out of Vancouver.
Rumours are flying that the Philadelphia Flyers are after both players, though other teams appear interested in Kesler.
Meanwhile, Calgary Flames winger Mike Cammalleri is also figuring in trade talk, even after his team offered him a contract extension.
Cammalleri, who has a no-trade clause, has reportedly submitted a list of seven teams he would accept a trade to.
While those teams figure out what to do with their players, the Edmonton Oilers went ahead and offloaded netminder Ilya Bryzgalov to the Minnesota Wild for a fourth-round draft pick in 2014. They also acquired Ducks netminder Viktor Fasth in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a third-round pick in 2015.
Hockey journalists focused their attention on Bryzgalov and his "wild" behaviour in the wake of the trades.
The Montreal Canadiens also figured in the trade frenzy, acquiring Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2015 draft.
Of course, no trade roundup would be complete without mentioning the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Thee team has not been featured prominently in trade rumours recently, as GM Dave Nonis told Sportsnet last week that he doesn't anticipate making any significant moves.
Nonis reportedly does not want to move goaltender James Reimer, who has played fewer games than Jonathan Bernier this season.
The Winnipeg Jets are also not expected to make major moves, though teams are reportedly interested in defencemen Dustin Byfuglien and Mark Stuart. Forwards Olli Jokinen and Devin Setoguchi could end up as rental players for a team making a playoff push, The Globe and Mail reported.
