Toronto Cat Cafe: Pet Lover Looks To Open Coffee Shop

Hot on the heels of the announcement that Montreal could be opening a cat cafe this summer, and Vancouver is looking to welcome furry friends in a coffee shop come fall, one entrepreneur is looking at achieving the same goal in Toronto, blogTO reports.

Jennifer Morozowich, who works in marketing in Toronto and two cats named Wilma and Betty, is "still in the infancy stage" of planning, according to the site. Morozowich envisions a place that offers drinks and food, alongside pet toys, nights with veterinarians, and of course, the option to adopt a new fluffy friend. She is looking at options in Toronto's Koreatown, around Bloor and Christie.

Popular in Japan, these cafes are meant to allow people who don't have space or time for pets (or aren't permitted to have them in their apartments), a place to enjoy some feline company.

However, as Metro Toronto points out, there are food safety regulations to contend with, which Morozowich plans to get around by putting the food and drink in a separate room from the animals. According to Ontario Regulation 562 under the Health Protection and Promotion Act, animals are not allowed in places where food is manufactured, prepared, processed, handled, served, displayed, stored, sold or offered for sale. There is an exception made for service animals.

As it stands, Morozowich says she has the interest of pet shelters who are looking to help find foster homes for their cats.
