Vancouver police shot an armed man in a Kingsway apartment building, and then discovered a slain woman in a suite — with an injured child.
Police received a 911 call at about 10:30 a.m. Monday about a child crying, a man yelling, and blood on the hallway walls of the apartment building in the 3300 block of Kingsway, said a news release from the force.
A 33-year-old man with a knife confronted the two responding officers, who were forced to draw their firearms, said Robin Plomp with the Independent Investigations Office (IIO). The suspect was shot and taken to hospital, where he remains under guard.
The woman, who was found with "multiple injuries," was declared dead at the scene. A girl, estimated to be five or six years old, was taken to hospital with injuries that are not considered life threatening, said Vancouver police Const. Brian Montague.
Police said they had not yet determined the relationship between the dead woman, the child and the suspect.
Gurinder Sodhi, who owns some apartments in the complex and also works next door, told CBC News the suspect lived with his mother who spoke little English.
Another neighbour said that the slain woman was known to babysit her granddaughter, reported CBC.
The IIO, which looks into deaths or injuries involving police, has taken over the shooting part of the investigation.
No officers were injured in the incident. The woman's death is the city's third homicide of the year.
