Humans remains have been discovered near Banff.

RCMP closed Vermillion Lakes Road west of the Banff town site for several hours on Wednesday to investigate the area.

Bones had been discovered by a hiker in early April, but RCMP had to wait for the weather to improve to do a thorough search.

Additonal bones were discovered during the search and RCMP say a pathologist will now determine whether they are human and if the cases are related.

“That is a possibility but as of right now we are keeping all investigation avenues open and this case is just being treated on its own for now,” Media Officer Chris Kosack told 660 News.

Two sets of human remains were discovered last year in Banff National Park, near Casacde Mountain and Mt. Norquay, but Kosack told the Calgary Sun there's no reason to believe the discoveries are related.

Banff RCMP and RCMP Calgary Major Crime Unit are continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Banff RCMP or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
