Actor Charlie Day returned to his alma matter to tell graduates their new degrees are worth “nothing” and if they want to make something of their lives, they better not fear failure.
The “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” funnyman received a honourary doctorate from Boston’s Merrimack College on Sunday and delivered a speech marked with some bona fide wisdom.
“You cannot let a fear of failure, or a fear of comparison, or a fear of judgement stop you from doing what’s going to make you great. You cannot succeed without this risk of failure,” Day said to the crowd.
The reality checks didn’t stop there. Sixteen years after his own commencement, Day told graduates if they desire success, they’ll have to put in some hard work.
“Everything I’m truly proud of in this life has been a terrifying prospect to me. From my first play, to hosting ‘Saturday Night Live,’ getting married, being a father, speaking to you today. None of it comes easy. People will tell you to do what makes you happy, but all this has been hard work. And I’m not always happy,” he explained.
“I don’t think you should just do what makes you happy. Do what makes you great.”
