An Okanagan man stopped to help who he thought were stranded motorists, but was instead beaten and carjacked.
Robert Polyak said he was driving in Kelowna around 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday when he saw three men and a woman standing at a parked vehicle with its hood up, reported Castanet.net.
"I grew up in a small town, so when someone needs help, you help them,” Polyak, who is originally from Merritt, told the media outlet.
As Polyak turned to get out of his car, he was smashed in the back of the head with a baton, and then kicked and hit repeatedly, according to CBC News.
One of the men stole Polyak's car, while the others drove off in a brown vehicle, he said. A Subaru matching the description of Polyak's car was later found burning on a gravel road.
Polyak received 11 staples to the back of his head, but he told CBC he won't let this deter him from stopping to help others. "Karma will get them, I guess," he said.
"It's a strange event," RCMP Const. Kris Clark told Kelowna Capital News. "We have a few pieces of the puzzle that we're trying to fit together, but it's really too early to say what actually occurred."
RCMP say the incident may be connected to an overnight mugging in the same area where the victim was treated in hospital for stab wounds.
