Grouse Grind hikers are now being forced to pay a little more for their experience with the introduction of parking fees at its gravel lot.
While an adjacent paved lot has always charged for parking, the gravel lot used to be free, Global News reports. But now the lot costs $2 for three hours or $4 for the whole day.
The money will go towards paving, new lights, and more security in the lot, officials told the news outlet. But the fees are upsetting many hikers.
"Why get rid of the free parking? For someone like me that does the grind multiple times per week, that's going to add up to a significant extra expense for me," Matthew David wrote on the Grind's Facebook page.
"This is terrible news! Goddam Grouse Grind is slowly taking away all of its good attributes that the locals used to enjoy as it becomes more corporate and a tourist money trap!" wrote Panta Zarrinkamar.
The extremely popular hike, considered Vancouver's most used trail, stretches 2.9 kilometres up Grouse Mountain.
There are a total of 2,830 (free of charge) stairs to climb in order to reach the top. The only way down is by paid gondola.
