Well, that kind of backfired.
To get students excited about graduation, the University of British Columbia created a #UBCGrad hashtag and posted large stickers around the school getting grads to fill in the blank: "I will always remember UBC for ..."
We're guessing faculty and staff were hoping for answers about memorable classes, nights at the Pit, and cheering the Thunderbirds. Instead, one grad chose to highlight: "Crippling debt."
The photo has since taken off on social media.
Ouch.
Student debt is a harsh reality for many recent grads in Canada. The Canadian Federation of Students estimates the average student owes $27,000 by the time he or she graduates.
Thanks to their seemingly insurmountable expenses, millennials have even been dubbed "Generation Screwed."
Now THAT hurts.
