Cyclist Shot At Random During Bike Event

A cyclist was shot at random while participating in a two-day road event in B.C.'s Thompson region, say police.

Someone opened fire on the 59-year-old man on Highway 1, just south of Spences Bridge, at around 1 a.m. on Sunday. He was seriously injured and remains in stable condition in hospital, said RCMP Const. Kris Clark.

An unknown suspect fled in a pickup truck, said Clark. He added that the shooting does not appear to be targeted.

The victim, who is from Burnaby, was participating in the Cache Creek 600, a two-day, 600-kilometre cycling event from Pitt Meadows to Cache Creek.
