Brazil didn't expect to start the 2014 World Cup this way.
The host country scored an own goal after defender Marcelo tried to deflect a cross by Croatia's Ivica Olic in the first game of the tournament.
It was a historic moment which marked the second time that a World Cup host nation has conceded an own goal, Slate reported. Mexico was the last country to do so in 1970.

Luckily for Marcelo, Neymar equalized and then took the lead later in the game, but that didn't stop social media users from relentlessly mocking the defender on Twitter.

Not everyone was having fun after the own goal, however. Twitter user @Marcello took plenty of flak when people thought his account belonged to the soccer player.
