FIFA World Cup 2014: Which Team Are Canadians Supporting?

Which Team Is Canada Supporting?

Canadians may not have a home team to cheer on during the World Cup, but we’re still getting in on the action, buying flags for cars, jerseys for ourselves — and even our pets.

But it’s not host country Brazil most Canadians are supporting; it’s Portugal.

Information revealed by eBay Canada shows that nationally, Canadians spent the most amount of money on items for Portugal, followed by Italy and Germany.

Regionally, Torontonians and Montreal residents are also opting to support Portugal and Italy, while the third choice is Spain for Toronto and Germany for Montreal. Vancouverites are shaking things up a bit, by supporting Italy, Uruguay and then Germany.

The results were determined by tracking the 13,000 national flags and 4,000 jerseys for the world’s 20 top players Canadians bought on eBay between March 1, 2014 and May 20, 2014.

The website also found that the most popular player among Canadians is Lionel Messi, who plays for Argentina. The online store sold 1,700 jerseys with his name, more than Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr. combined.

Some Canadians aren't holding back when it comes to splurging. The most expensive piece of memorabilia purchased on eBay Canada was a pair of tickets to match 50, round 16 of the games for $3,500.
