Environment Canada confirmed a tornado touched down in southern Ontario Tuesday, causing some major damage in the town of New Tecumseth.
Eighteen properties were damaged, according to New Tecumseth Fire Chief Dan Heydon. Of those affected buildings, one has been deemed unsafe.
In a statement, Environment Canada says the twister struck around 3:30 p.m., downing trees and power lines. Wind speeds are estimated to have been between 135 to 175 km/h.
Officials believe it may have been an EF1 tornado. However, the confirmation is preliminary as investigators review witness accounts and examine damage in the area.
"We've got one residence [that] has been hit here and the roof has been torn off, part of the second floor has caved in," Ontario Provincial Police Const. Paul Nancekivell told CBC News.
The town’s fire department tweeted a photo of damage done to one home.
According to CTV News, one horse died and multiple animals were hurt during the severe storm. No human injuries have yet been reported.
Video footage of what appears to be a descending funnel cloud was also captured by Jordan Brewer and Kelly Dove as they drove near Tottenham.
Gary Grant, an area resident, told the Orangeville Banner he saw “nothing but broken trees and damage” down the tornado's path.
"Two-foot wide trees are torn up right out of the ground,” he said.
News of the tornado comes a week after about 100 homes were damaged by an EF2 twister in nearby Essa Township. Angus Mayor Terry Dowdall told the Barrie Examiner it remains unknown how many homes in total will have to be demolished.
